Most privacy pages are written to protect whoever built the thing. This one is written so you can decide, with your eyes open, whether you want to tell your stories to a computer program. Please read the part about what Maddie writes about you — that is the part people are most often surprised by, and I would rather surprise you here than later.
The short version.
I am. My name is Jason Jeyanandan and I am in New Brunswick, Canada. There is no company behind this site. Obsidian Delta Corp donated the underlying software so this demonstration could exist; it does not run this site, does not hold your stories, and is not the party you are dealing with. I am. Write to [email protected] and it reaches one person.
Your email address. That is how you sign in and how anything reaches you. There is no password — you type your email, I send a link, the link signs you in. Treat that email like a key.
The audio of your voice. When you tap Record, the clip is uploaded and kept. It is not deleted after transcription. It stays until you ask me to delete it.
A written transcript. A speech-recognition model turns the recording into text, and that text is kept alongside the audio.
What Maddie writes about you. Read this twice. As you talk, the system automatically generates and stores a running summary of your life so far; a list of the people and places you mention, so names stay consistent between sessions; and short observations about what seems to matter to you. These are written by a computer making inferences. They can be wrong. They are not a record of what you said — they are a machine’s interpretation of it. You can ask to see them, correct them, or have them deleted.
What is not collected. No payment details — there is nothing to buy. No location tracking. No contacts. No advertising trackers, no pixels, no data brokers. There are no advertisers here because there is no money here.
The email address, to sign you in and send you your book. The audio, so the words can be transcribed, so accuracy can be checked, and so you keep the actual sound of the voice — which for many families turns out to be the part that matters most. The transcript, because it is the verbatim record and it ships with every memoir. The summary and notes, so Maddie remembers your story across sessions instead of starting cold every time. Nothing here is used for any other purpose. If I ever wanted to use it for something else, I would ask you first and you would be free to say no.
Your recording does not stay on one machine. To work at all, this passes through other companies:
Where it physically sits. These are international services. Your recordings, transcripts and notes are stored and processed outside New Brunswick and, in all likelihood, outside Canada — including in the United States. While information is in another country it is subject to that country’s laws, and courts or agencies there could in principle compel access to it. No Canadian privacy law prevents that. If that is not acceptable to you, please do not use this.
I do not use your stories to train, fine-tune or improve any AI model, and I have no interest in doing so.
I want to be careful about the rest of that sentence, because this is where services overpromise. Your words pass through third-party AI providers, and what those companies do with data sent to them is governed by their terms, not by my good intentions. I have not independently audited their internal practice, and I am not able to promise on their behalf that your words never touch their systems. Anyone who tells you otherwise about a service built this way is guessing.
Separately: Maddie keeping a memory of your own conversations, for your account only, is not training. That is just how she remembers your grandmother’s name between one session and the next.
Other users cannot. Each person’s material is isolated from everyone else’s. There is no shared feed and no way for one person to reach another’s stories.
I can. I run the servers and I hold the keys, so I am technically able to read any transcript here. I do not go looking, and I open an account’s material only when someone asks me for help with their own account or when I have to fix a fault I cannot fix otherwise. But “I choose not to” is a different promise from “I cannot,” and you deserve the accurate one.
Nobody else is given access — not family, not care homes, not researchers — unless you tell me to, or unless I am compelled by a valid legal order, in which case I will tell you if I am permitted to.
Security. Your information travels over encrypted connections and Cloudflare encrypts stored files at rest. That is the honest extent of the claim. No system is perfectly secure, this one is run by one person rather than a security team, and I cannot guarantee it will never be breached. Please weigh that before recording something you would be devastated to see exposed.
While your account is open, everything is kept indefinitely, so your book can keep growing. If you ask me to delete something, I delete it. If this service shuts down, I will give you at least 30 days’ notice at your sign-in email and a way to download everything first.
Please keep your own copy of anything precious. This is a free project run by one person. It is not an archive and it is not a backup.
Email [email protected] from the address on your account and say what you want. No special wording, no reason required.
I aim to answer within a few days and will respond within 30 days at the outside, which is the deadline Canadian law sets. One honest limit: once something is deleted it is gone and I cannot get it back for you afterwards, and I cannot un-send a PDF that has already been emailed.
In Canada, the federal law here is the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). You have the right to know what I hold, to see it, to correct it, to know who it has been disclosed to, and to withdraw your consent at any time — though if you withdraw it entirely I cannot keep running the service for you. Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta have their own private-sector privacy laws; Quebec’s is stricter in several respects. New Brunswick has no general private-sector statute, so PIPEDA governs here. Wherever you are, I will apply whichever protection is stronger rather than argue about which one technically binds me.
In the EU or UK, you have rights of access, correction, erasure, restriction, portability and objection under the GDPR and UK GDPR. My lawful basis is your consent, which you may withdraw at any time. Two honest notes: your information is transferred outside the EU and UK to the providers named above, and I am one individual, not an organisation with a compliance department.
In California, you have the right to know, to delete, to correct, and not to be discriminated against for asking. I do not sell or share personal information as the CCPA defines those terms, and there is nothing to opt out of, because there is no advertising here at all.
If I get it wrong, tell me first — I would rather fix it. But you are entitled to go over my head: in Canada, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca); in Quebec, the Commission d’accès à l’information; in the EU or UK, your national authority or the ICO.
If your information is lost, stolen or exposed and there is a real risk of significant harm to you, I will tell you and report it to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, as PIPEDA requires. I will tell you what happened, what was affected, and what you can do. I will not sit on it hoping you do not notice.
Most people using Maddie are older adults, and it would be dishonest to write this page as though that will never come up.
Please decide now, while it is easy. Email me the name of whoever should receive your recordings, transcripts and memoir if you die or become unable to manage your own affairs, and I will note it on your account. Without that instruction I will not hand anyone your stories, however sincere they sound and however closely related they are. If someone contacts me claiming to be your executor or attorney, I will ask for documentation and I may decline. I would rather disappoint a real relative than hand a life story to the wrong person.
On consent. If you are setting this up for a parent, make sure they understand and agree to being recorded. If they cannot meaningfully consent, please do not enrol them without the proper legal authority to make that decision for them. This is not a small point and I would rather lose the user than get it wrong.
This is for adults, and specifically for older adults. It is not for anyone under 18. I do not knowingly collect anything from a child. If you believe someone under 18 has recorded here, write to me and I will delete the account and its contents.
If I change how any of this works I will update this page and the date below. If the change is significant — a new category of data, a new third party, a different retention practice — I will email you before it takes effect. I will not change something material quietly.
